I frequently receive emails from readers who wish to replace their lost identification tags (also known as dog tags), or from family members who wish to get replacement dog tags for their loved ones, either as a gift, or to remember their service. These are all great reasons to get a new set of dog tags.

If you are still serving in the military, you can get a set of dog tags issued to you. Otherwise, you will need to purchase dog tags from a third party vendor. This guide will show you what you need to know about purchasing replacement dog tags.

In life, and in death, people want to be identified and remembered. Soldiers have used variations of dog tags and similar means of identification for hundreds of years. They were first used by US service members in the Civil War when soldiers would scratch their names and hometowns on the backs of their belt buckles or other gear. Informal identification badges soon became popular, and soldiers used a variety of pins, tags, medallions, or other objects in which they engraved their names, hometown, battles they fought in, and other information.

It was in WWII that dog tags earned their nickname, due to resembling dog registration tags required by many municipalities (the official name for dog tags is actually identification tags; the term dog tag is not officially recognized, though it is more widely used).

So where do you buy them? There are many places that will make custom dog tags. You can find them on many military installations, military surplus stores, or at dozens of online stores, including USAMilitaryMedals.com.

The last is of consideration is the style of the dog tags. Styles and methods have changed over the years. Many stores are able to make dog tags in a variety of styles, including those used through the major military eras. In many cases, websites make it easy to order a dog tag based on the era served, including WWII, Korea War, Vietnam era, and the current style. Be sure to specify the style you want when you place your order.

Military dog tags are very useful and can be used for much more than battlefield identification. Many people also buy military dog tags for purposes other than for their current or previous military service. Military-style dog tags can be used for pet identification (they are dog tags, after all!), to identify your luggage, as medical identification disks (to list allergies, medications, or medical conditions), as promotional items for businesses, and much more.

But you could try USA Military Medals, which offers a variety of military awards, decorations, uniform items, replacement dog tags, and other military regalia. Prices are reasonable, they ship within 24 hours, and quality is guaranteed. You can learn more at USAMilitaryMedals.com.

When should I license my dog?All dogs over four months of age must be licensed each year between December 1 and January 31. If you bring your dog into Ohio after January 31, the Dog Warden will honor the new license from the previous place of residence until tags are due in next calendar year. If you obtain your dog after January 31, you are required to purchase the license within 30 days. Ohio Revised Code Section 955.01.

Where do I purchase a dog license?Dog tags may be issued only by the County Auditor; however, there are several locations throughout the county where regular dog license can be purchased during the annual sale period of Dec 1 to Jan 31. After the annual sale period, regular dog tags may only be purchased from the County Auditor's Office and the Perry County Animal Control.

How does it work?Simply fill out the brief registration form and pay the annual fee per dog or kennel. Each dog receives a distinctive tag number (dog kennels receive five consecutively numbered tags). Once your dog has been assigned a license, the license number and the information about him is permanently filed in the county's records.

What are dog license fees in Preble County?Individual dog license is $14. Kennel license consists of 5 tags and is $70. These prices are good during the December/January renewal period.

Where do I purchase a dog license? You can purchase a license by mail or in person at the County Auditor's office any time during the year. During renewal time, several convenient locations in Clinton County are established to issue dog licenses. Call the Auditor's Office to find out where dog licenses are sold at (937) 382 - 2250.

What if I forget to buy my dog's license during the renewal period of December 1 through January 31?Ohio law requires a late fee ($14 in Clinton County, $70 for kennel tags). Simply pay the fee of $14 ($70 for kennel tags) for the current year's license. There are no provisions in the law to waive the fee.

One year tags and kennel dog tags expire on January 31st of each year. A dog owner is required to renew the dog license (for a one year or kennel tag) in the month of January every year.

Augusta County dog tags are permanent tags. This means that the numbered tag you are issued at the time of original purchase will be the one you keep every year unless it is lost, stolen or destroyed.

Annual and Lifetime duplicate tags for damaged or misplaced tags are available in our office for $1.50. To get a replacement tag, please mail a check or money order along with a note that has your dog's license number to:

The County of Shenandoah requires that all dogs four (4) months old or older be licensed. Owners who purchased a dog tag for the prior year will receive a renewal form the first of December of each year. If the rabies vaccination has expired, or no renewal form was received, the current vaccination certificate which has been signed by a veterinarian must be presented at the time of purchase. Dog tags are required to be purchased by January 31st.

*To purchase kennel tags the purchaser must present, each year, valid rabies certificate for each dog. A minimum of five (5) dogs is required to qualify for kennel tags. Kennel tags will only be sold for valid kennels.

  • A dog tag's purpose is to not only identify who your dog is, but more importantly, to identify who your dog belongs to. If your dog were to get lost, its dog tag should tell people your dog's name and at the very least, your phone number. If there is room to add your street address and your name, those would be secondary to the necessary information."}},"@type": "Question","name": "What is the best way to attach an ID tag to your dog's collar?","acceptedAnswer": "@type": "Answer","text": "A dog tag is best attached to your dog's collar with a key ring. Because key rings can be difficult to use, make sure the tag is attached to the key ring before attaching the key ring to the collar. Then remove your dog's collar from your dog's neck to put the dog tag on the metal loop that's attached to the collar. A staple remover can help you open the key ring enough to slide it onto the metal loop on the collar.","@type": "Question","name": "What is a service dog ID tag?","acceptedAnswer": "@type": "Answer","text": "Service dogs will have different ID tags than non-service dogs. Not only do they identify who the dog is alongside the contact information for its owner, but they also note that the dog is a service dog. The tag will clearly say "Service Dog" and usually has the service dog logo or icon, too."]}]}] .icon-garden-review-1fill:#b1dede.icon-garden-review-2fill:none;stroke:#01727a;stroke-linecap:round;stroke-linejoin:round > buttonbuttonThe Spruce PetsNewslettersClose search formOpen search formSearch DogsGetting Started
