Huawei Honor 9X Pro Review: A Budget Phone with a Premium Feel

If you are looking for a budget smartphone that offers a premium design, a large notch-free display, a powerful performance, a decent camera, and a long-lasting battery, you might want to consider the Huawei Honor 9X Pro. This phone was launched in 2019 as a global version of the Honor 9X Pro that was released in China earlier. It has some notable differences from the regular Honor 9X, such as a better chipset, more RAM and storage options, and no Google services or apps.

In this review, we will take a closer look at the Huawei Honor 9X Pro and see what it has to offer in terms of features, design, performance, camera quality, battery life, connectivity options, security features, and software experience. We will also discuss the pros and cons of this phone and answer some frequently asked questions about it.

Design and Display

The Huawei Honor 9X Pro has a premium design that is made of glass on both sides and an aluminum frame in between. The phone measures 163.5 x 77.3 x 8.8 mm and weighs 202 grams. It feels solid and comfortable in the hand, but it is also quite large and slippery.

The phone comes in two color options: Midnight Black and Phantom Purple. The latter has a gradient effect that changes from purple to blue depending on the angle of light. Both colors have a glossy finish that reflects light and creates an eye-catching look.

The phone has a notch-free design, thanks to the motorized pop-up selfie camera that emerges from the top edge when needed. The phone also has thin bezels around the screen, except for the slightly thicker chin at the bottom. The phone has a 91% screen-to-body ratio, which is impressive for a budget device.

The phone has a 6.59-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The display is bright, sharp, and colorful, with good viewing angles and contrast. The display also supports eye comfort mode, which reduces blue light and prevents eye strain. The display has no notch or hole-punch, which means you can enjoy a full-screen viewing experience without any interruptions.

Performance and Battery

The Huawei Honor 9X Pro is powered by the Kirin 810 chipset, which is a 7nm octa-core processor with two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.27GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.88GHz. The chipset also has a Mali-G52 MP6 GPU and a dedicated NPU (neural processing unit) for AI tasks. The phone comes with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 512GB via a microSD card (using the shared SIM slot).

The phone runs on Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9.1 on top. However, due to the US trade ban on Huawei, the phone does not have Google services or apps pre-installed, such as Google Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, Maps, etc. Instead, the phone uses Huawei Mobile Services and AppGallery, which we will discuss later in this review.

The phone delivers a smooth and fast performance, thanks to the powerful chipset and ample RAM. The phone can handle multitasking, browsing, streaming, and gaming with ease. The phone also has a liquid cooling system that prevents overheating and throttling. The phone supports GPU Turbo 3.0 technology, which enhances the gaming performance and reduces battery consumption.

The phone has a 4000mAh battery that can last for a full day of moderate to heavy use. The phone supports 10W charging via the USB-C port, but it does not support fast charging or wireless charging. The phone takes about two hours to fully charge from zero to 100%. The phone also has a power saving mode and an ultra power saving mode that extend the battery life further.

Camera and Audio

The Huawei Honor 9X Pro has a triple rear camera setup that consists of a 48MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor with an f/2.4 aperture and a 120-degree field of view, and a 2MP depth sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The rear camera also has phase detection autofocus (PDAF), LED flash, HDR, panorama, and AI scene recognition features.

The rear camera can take good photos in daylight conditions, with plenty of details, accurate colors, and balanced exposure. The ultra-wide sensor can capture more of the scene, but it also introduces some distortion and noise at the edges. The depth sensor can create a nice bokeh effect for portrait shots, but it can also miss some edges and blur some parts of the subject.

The rear camera can record videos up to 1080p at 60fps or 720p at 960fps (slow-motion). The video quality is decent, but it lacks stabilization and dynamic range. The rear camera also supports night mode, which can improve the low-light performance by taking multiple exposures and combining them into one image.

The phone has a motorized pop-up selfie camera that has a 16MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. The selfie camera also has HDR, AI beautification, and portrait mode features. The selfie camera can take decent selfies in good lighting conditions, but it can also smoothen the skin and overexpose the background. The selfie camera can record videos up to 1080p at 30fps.

The phone has a single bottom-firing speaker that produces loud and clear sound quality. The speaker also supports Histen sound effects that enhance the audio experience. The phone also has a 3.5mm headphone jack that supports Dolby Atmos sound technology for immersive sound quality. The phone also has an FM radio that works with wired headphones. Connectivity and Security

The Huawei Honor 9X Pro supports dual SIM cards (nano-SIM) and 4G LTE networks. The phone also supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, hotspot, Bluetooth 4.2, A2DP, LE, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, and USB-C 2.0. The phone does not support NFC or infrared port, which means you cannot use it for contactless payments or remote control functions.

The phone has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that is integrated with the power button. The fingerprint scanner is fast and accurate, and it can also be used to unlock apps and access the safe folder. The phone also supports face unlock, which uses the pop-up selfie camera to scan your face. The face unlock is convenient and works well in good lighting conditions, but it can be slower and less secure in low-light or dark situations.

The phone also has other security features, such as app lock, file encryption, private space, app twin, and password vault. The phone also has a digital balance feature that helps you manage your screen time and usage habits.

Huawei Mobile Services and AppGallery

As mentioned earlier, the Huawei Honor 9X Pro does not have Google services or apps pre-installed on the phone. This means you cannot access Google Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Photos, Drive, Chrome, etc. on the phone. Instead, the phone uses Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and AppGallery as alternatives to Google Mobile Services (GMS) and Google Play Store.

Huawei Mobile Services are a set of cloud-based services that provide core functionalities for Huawei devices. These include Huawei
